BIOMECHANICAL & GAIT ANALYSIS

Biomechanical and Gait Analysis at Park Road Podiatry

Gait analysis and biomechanical assessments are diagnostic tools used to examine how you walk, run, or move during physical activity. These assessments allow us to evaluate the movement patterns of your lower limbs, including your feet, knees, hips, and lower back. By observing your posture, stride, and range of motion, we can identify any abnormalities that may be contributing to pain, discomfort, or inefficiencies in your movement. At Park Road Podiatry, we offer comprehensive gait analysis and biomechanical assessments, which will evaluate:

  • Foot and ankle alignment: How your feet align when standing, walking, or running.
  • Knee and hip movement: How your knees and hips work in sync with your feet.
  • Posture and weight distribution: How your body weight is distributed as you move.
  • Range of motion: Flexibility and joint movement, particularly in the feet, ankles, knees, and hips.

These assessments help identify any misalignments or issues in your lower limb mechanics that may be contributing to pain or discomfort. Russell Cooper, our HCPC-registered podiatrist, uses advanced techniques to assess how your feet, legs, and joints work together. Based on the findings, we will provide tailored treatments to improve your mobility and overall foot health.

Why Is Gait Analysis Important?

Understanding how you walk and move is key to addressing issues such as pain or injury. Poor biomechanics can contribute to a range of conditions, including:

  • Heel and foot pain (e.g., plantar fasciitis, heel spurs)
  • Knee pain (e.g., patellofemoral pain, IT band syndrome)
  • Hip pain (e.g., hip impingement or osteoarthritis)
  • Shin splints
  • Running injuries (e.g., stress fractures, tendonitis)

By identifying abnormal movement patterns early, we can prevent more serious injuries and improve your overall function. Once the assessment is complete, we will provide personalised recommendations for treatment. Based on your specific needs, any number of options could be recommended from targeted exercises and stretching programs, to custom orthotics that are designed to improve alignment and reduce pressure on specific areas of your feet and joints.

What happens during a gait analysis appointment?

During the appointment, we will observe your walking patterns and assess your posture, joint alignment, and movement. You will be asked to walk or run across a treadmill or a designated path while we analyse how your body moves and how it may be contributing to pain or discomfort.

How long does a biomechanical assessment take?

A typical gait analysis and biomechanical assessment appointment lasts up to an hour, depending on the complexity of your case and the number of movement patterns we need to assess.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?

Yes, we recommend bringing shorts for easy access to your lower limbs and a selection of shoes that you wear most often (e.g., work shoes, running shoes, or sports shoes). This helps us evaluate how different footwear affects your gait and alignment.

What conditions can gait analysis help with?

Gait analysis and biomechanical assessments are helpful for a wide range of conditions, including foot pain, knee pain, shin splints, hip pain, running injuries, and general mobility issues. Identifying abnormal movement patterns allows us to develop a tailored treatment plan to improve your function and reduce pain.
