NAIL SURGERY
Nail Surgery at Park Road Podiatry
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or corner of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, and sometimes infection. It is most commonly seen in the big toe but can also affect other toes. Common causes of ingrown toenails include:
- Improper trimming of nails (cutting them too short or rounding the edges)
- Trauma to the toe, such as stubbing or injury
- Tight or ill-fitting footwear, which can press the nail into the skin
- Genetic predisposition, where the nail naturally grows in a curved shape
If left untreated, ingrown toenails can cause progressive pain, swelling, and infection. The infection can spread to the surrounding tissue, making the condition more severe and harder to manage.
During your consultation at our Coventry clinic, our HCPC-registered podiatry team will conduct a thorough examination of your toe and nail. We’ll take a detailed history to determine the cause of your ingrown toenail, as well as identify any predisposing conditions that may be contributing to the problem. If necessary, additional tests may be performed to rule out underlying conditions such as diabetes or peripheral vascular disease, which can make the condition more serious. If you’re experiencing pain, inflammation, or recurring issues with an ingrown toenail, we are here to help you find lasting relief.
Nail Surgery For Ingrown Toenails
In many cases, ingrown toenails require surgical intervention, especially if the condition is persistent, causing recurring infections, or if conservative treatments (such as proper trimming or antibiotics) have not worked. Nail surgery for an ingrown toenail is a safe and effective procedure that can provide long-term relief.
The procedure typically takes around 30 minutes and is done under local anaesthesia, so there’s no need for a general anaesthetic. Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days, though some post-operative care is required to ensure healing and prevent complications.

Aftercare for Nail Surgery
Keep the Area Clean and Dry
Follow the aftercare instructions to avoid infection and promote healing.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
Avoid tight or ill-fitting footwear that could put pressure on the toe.
Pain Management
Some discomfort may occur after the procedure, but this can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
Follow-up Appointment
You may be scheduled for a follow-up visit to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel any pain during the surgery. After the anaesthesia wears off, you may experience some discomfort, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
Recovery is generally quick, with most patients able to return to their normal activities within 2-3 days. Full healing of the toe may take 4-6 weeks, depending on the severity of the surgery and how well you follow aftercare instructions.
Nail surgery is highly effective at preventing the recurrence of ingrown toenails. The application of a chemical to the nail matrix (growth area) prevents the nail from regrowing in an abnormal way, providing long-term relief.
If the toe is numbed with local anaesthesia, you may not be able to drive immediately after the procedure due to the numbness. It’s recommended to arrange for transportation to and from the clinic on the day of your surgery.
As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks, including infection, bleeding, or improper healing. However, we will provide clear aftercare instructions to minimise these risks.
